Now, I love the holidays. Don't get me wrong.
But left with unintentional thoughts and actions, well, I can easily be left feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and avoiding everything and everyone that needs tending to.
And that feeling is not so merry.
Many people wonder what the best secret is to ward off the weight gain of the holidays. Well folks, its self-care. Its managing your stress so you don't dive into every holiday cocktail you are offered or realize 10 cookies in that you haven't even enjoyed the taste of one yet. When we take care of ourselves and fill ourselves up beyond our plates, we make more rational and reasonable decisions when it comes to the foods we choose to enjoy. This then helps us feel better in our bodies and we are able to show up as our best selves on more occasions.
So I thought I would share my go to self-care recipe for when you need to recharge. You will not need much, but if you have small children, you will need to ask for a partner, friend, or family member to amuse them for an hour or so. And everyone will benefit from you doing so.
Alas, a self-care recipe for the holidays . . .
tealights or candles
a face mask (I have been using straight coconut yogurt and have been loving it)
a good book or magazine
a favorite playlist
Choose a venue. My go to is the bath tub, but if that doesn't work for you, setting up your bedroom or other favorite nook with work just beautifully.
As you light your tealights or candles, set an intention or say a prayer. Maybe it is to let go of the day and its worries or to release your shoulder muscles. Maybe you ask whomever or whatever you pray to, to help you heal and recharge for the next hour. Turn on your favorite playlist to set a relaxing holiday vibe. I have been loving this one and this one. Once you have your playlist on, place your phone on silent and set it on the other side of the room. No touchy.
Give your face a good wash and apply a favorite face mask. Allow yourself some space to be pampered. You deserve it, but I don't have to tell you that.
Cozy up with a uplifting read. For magazines I love recharging with Bella Grace and Magnolia Journal. As for books, I have recently been loving Uninvited. But pick anything that you truly will look forward diving into.
Get comfy and relax amongst the fullness of the festivities this time of year. Taking time to slow down and care for yourself now will help you to enjoy the best of the season that is yet to come.
What would you add to this self-care recipe to make it perfect for you? Xo
