I have always heard of how establishing a healthy morning routine is the secret to having a great day. Oprah meditates and exercises. Jennifer Aniston sips on a green smoothie with adaptogens. Some find yoga, journaling, or gratitude a necessity. And while sometimes I find that taking in outside wellness suggestions for how to begin my day allows me for more calm and balance, other times I simply feel stressed trying to fit in more things into my morning that I should be doing in order to be healthy.
So I started a different type of morning practice. First, I do not create anything for myself that is deemed mandatory. I mean, yes, I feed my kids and take a shower, but beyond what I feel is fairly necessary, my morning routine is centered around this following idea: 'Do what I am going to look forward to.' When I start the day with activities that I look forward to doing, I know that I am headed in the right direction. Towards what brings me joy, excitement, and ease. And this is the best tone you can set for your day. Enjoying and looking forward to the way you begin.
Last night, for instance, I dreamt up a couple things that I would really look forward to come morning. A cup of coffee in bed, journaling in my new favorite book, and turning on some of my favorite music. What puts my heart at ease is knowing that nothing on this list is something I absolutely need to do, or even comes highly recommended by outside sources; but rather they are things my heart truly wants to do. Things that add joy and a certain level of fulfillment to my life. Small and simple things, that are meaningful to me. And I love how this approach has taken the pressure off the 'do more' morning mentality.
We are all unique. You are called to enjoy different things than the next person. So don't get down on yourself if you don't do yoga, meditate, journal, and body brush all before 7am.
We all have so many tasks that need to be done. We have to pay bills, work, deal with uncomfortable feelings, you know, the list goes on and on. So don't start your day with more things that the outside world is telling you that you should be doing. Hey, maybe you just really don't like meditating or journaling. So don't do it. Instead, allow yourself some time in the morning to connect with your soul and fill yourself up from the start. It doesn't have to be fancy or complicated. Just something you can and will look forward to doing that leaves you feeling better than before.
I compiled a playlist for you that is dedicated to a beautiful start. I hope it helps you to begin your day with more grace, beauty, and ease. Xo
