The old journal. You probably had something like it when you were little, no? The flowery, pink diary with a lock and key? It was a diary then, and its a journal now. No matter what you choose to call it, a collection of paper for you to unleash your thoughts and to allow your mind + heart to unload is an excellent way to tune in and discover more about you. To connect deeper within and to create space in your day for you to be expressive. To not hold back. Our minds are so busy with all we have going on, but when you take several minutes to sit down and focus your thoughts and emotions onto paper, something changes. You start engaging in your life in a different way and you begin to listen to yourself and show up on a higher level.
In 2015, I became pregnant with twin boys while my dad was declining from cancer. My dad. The most influential person in the first 30 years of my life. There was excitement in the new lives I was creating in my body, yet there pain and struggle in watching and feeling my dad leave my side. About a month after my dad passed away, my little sister got married. Celebration but heartbreak. Life yet loss. And two months later, I went into labor. We lost one of beautiful our boys due to unexplained reasons and we welcomed one of our beautiful boys, crying and screaming and breathing into this world. And there it was again; celebration but heartbreak. Life yet loss.
I tell my story because when I express the duality of my emotions, the duality of my life; I find truth and I find healing. People often look me in my eyes and in my heart and tell me how sorry they are when I tell them about my joys and my losses of 2015. That they will never know sadness like I have known. But, the truth is we all experience celebration and heartbreak. Joy yet pain. Life and loss. We experience it in our daily lives. Some experiences are more intense and yes some are more powerful, but we all experience this duality. Maybe it comes by way of freedom from a partner but the pain of a divorce. Excitement from retiring but fear of finding who you truly are. Joy of becoming a parent but sadness of letting go a life you once knew. The joy of a morning coffee and but the struggle of making through another day's work.
There is no difference in this way from you and me. From my story to yours. Whatever it may look like. In this way we are connected and unified in our celebration and in our struggle; in simply trying to experience this life the best we can. The more opportunity we have to experience life, whether it is heartbreak or celebration, the more opportunity we have to simply experience. The more opportunity we have to experience healing. The more opportunity we receive to truly know ourselves.
Having the experience of celebrating life and intense heartbreak has taught me so much. It has taught me to make room for quiet. To make room to listen. To take moments to express what my mind and my heart have to say. To truly feel the pleasant and the not so. And honestly, after fully embracing, listening to, and acknowledging the duality of my emotions, my joys as well as my losses.... well, I have never felt so much peace. In accepting the entire breadth of myself; I have come to appreciate the whole me and this entire life that I live. The beauty AND the pain. What I enjoy and what I can learn. And one of the ways I found healing and this sense of peace was through writing. In expressing by putting pen to paper. In becoming to know myself a bit fuller, a bit better. And it is why I ultimately created my e-book and guided journal; because I knew if this way helped me in my life, it would help so many others in their lives too.

Take a cozy seat somewhere with a cup of tea, a light blanket, pen + paper, and spend some moments connecting with yourself. Taking some deep breaths, coming into the present. You can ask yourself any question you need clarification on or that you find interesting... write your question down and see what you write in response. Listen to what your body has to say. I bet the words are wise, intuitive, and true. If you are having a hard time coming up with prompts, here are a few:
What do I love about myself and in what ways do I celebrate that in my life?
What do I need more of to live a happier, more vibrant life?
What do I have enough of? Why am I lucky?
What part of my soul and spirit needs healing? What can I do to support that process?
My wish to you is that with this seemingly simple and ordinary routine, that you will find peace and joy in your heart to the capacity where you did not think possible. To cultivate self-love and connection in a way that feels authentically you.
