Today I was reminded on how far I've come during the past 5 years. Sometimes I forget (or rather block out) how unhealthy and sick I was for several years of my young adult life. But then I speak with people and hear their stories, I am reminded that so many of us deal with our own personal health issues. We are not alone! For me, it all peaked in college when I went out on my own (of course with much assistance from my amazing parents) to live in New. York. City. And man, how little I knew about caring for my body.
I never gave much thought to health, besides the fact that yoga looked "cool" and seemingly healthy people looked great in clothes. I never knew how much living a healthy lifestyle and eating a wholesome diet could completely change everything. For me, I discovered the wellness arena after becoming chronically sick and the culmination resulting in having to quit my collegiate volleyball career and spend a semester in bed (not exaggerating!) I had been that girl who didn't care, who wasn't present, and emotionally ate garbage without even really paying attention. I was out of touch with myself and reality.
After trying doctor after doctor and nothing really coming of the visits, one of my roommates at the time suggested I go and see a homeopathic doctor. Nothing else had worked... so I gave it a go. When I met with her the questions were very different from the other doctors I had seen. She asked me detailed questions for about an hour ranging from diet related to exercise and even about my bowel movements. I had never even given any thought to that before! She prescribed some natural remedies for me, we chatted about diet, and she suggested I start doing some light weight lifting. We essentially came up with a lifestyle plan with some small and simple changes. No doctor had suggested that before. They usually just prescribed me antidepressants. And this suggestion, to take an active role helping my body heal, was the start of me listening to what I needed... body, mind, and spirit, to live a more complete, healthy, and happy existence.
I wish I could tell you from that moment on I felt great and had everything figured out. I didn't, and I still don't. At that time I had no clue what healthy even was. Currently, I am still trying to balance everything in my life, move forward personally and professionally, and make the right choices that support me in feeling my best. But, I'm not perfect, and all these things take time. Its all a journey. BUT, what I can tell you is that trying to find a healthful diet that works for me has been my saving grace. I am in constant exploration of what makes me feel great and upbeat. I am always searching for nourishment that actually makes me feel better after I consume it. (Revelation!) I have learned to embrace cooking and food developing as opposed to eating fast food, I have opted for making healthier versions of sweet treats (I still LOVE dessert), I have learned that what I need might be, and often is, different from others . These are small things that have made a huge difference. You don't have to do everything perfect. You just have to try, one step at a time, to do your best wherever you might be in the midst of your journey.
Bottom line: When you eat better, you feel better. When you feel better.... who knows what amazing things you'll do next.
Start by making one change in your diet. Maybe you eat more veggies or chew more throughly or opt for less take out. Make one small change and be open to the results. Be inquisitive about the results. I have tried many things.... some worked for me and some didn't. (i.e. I personally do better without or only small amounts of gluten in my diet, but do wonderfully with all types of meat) It is ultimately up to you to find out what makes you thrive, but you have to be open to a little change.
